So here goes.
After I parked my car I headed to the ticket machine like normal. I pulled out my wallet and had my breeze card ready. As I started to reload my breeze card a guy started yelling at me from the other side of the gates.
" Hey boss, I gottcha right here..." he then went to the handicapped gate and it opened.
( Little known fact about the handicaped gate. There is a sensor on the inside of the gate that detects when someone is in a wheelchair and it automatically opens. You don't have to scan your breeze card, you just stand there and it opens. )
He held out his hand with a breeze card in it.
" I gottcha right here boss...I just need that 2 dollars.."
I froze.
2 dollars....why would this guy try to sell me a MARTA ticket.. when I was standing at the ticket machine clearly ready to buy one from there. Then it occured to me this guy was standing in the handicapped gate. That is when all of the alarm bells went off in my head.
This guy was trying to rip me off.
So I went back to the ticket machine making up something about if I use my credit card then my company would expense the cost of the ticket. Either I was speaking Greek or this guy didn't care.
" Come on boss...I gottcha right hure...."
Im also wearing headphones..did I mention that?
So this guy continues to say this over and over, slapping his hand into his other hand trying to get my attention. I then buy my ticket and walk to the gate and scan my breeze card. After passing through the gate the guy looks at me like I dismissed him as a fired employee.
" Come on man...you can't fault a guy for trying to get some food..."
I'm not sure why I even stopped to say anything or what made me say it but I stopped turned to look at him and said:
" Well that doesn't make any fucking sense now does it ?? Why would you buy a MARTA ticket...stand next to the ticket machine and scream at people to buy it?? If you want food, then why not go buy food?? Don't "buy" MARTA tickets and then get mad when people don't buy them from you. "
I started walking and looked back, " Its obvious that those tickets are empty..."
He didn't like this too much. He was probably in his 50's , heavy set and ugly. I went down the stairs and saw in the reflection that he was following me. Not entirely worried about the fallout from a 50 year old homeless black man, I continued to walk.
I walked to my normal spot and stopped and waited and looked to the direction of the stairs. He came down the stairs, looked at me, then looked at the security camera I was standing under... and went back to the gate.
What do you think people who never read this?
Should I have notified the MARTA police?
Yeah, notifying Marta police probably would have been a good idea. Not just because he's trying to rip people off, but because if he's willing to follow you, he might try to follow & hurt someone else.
